Putting Extreme Cold® Performance-Boosting Refrigerant Additive to the Test

An inexpensive way to potentially increase the cooling properties of automotive A/C systems is through the addition of performance-boosting refrigerant additives.  But, do they really work?

Performance additives, like FJC’s Extreme Cold® circulate through the A/C system and increase the cooling capacity of the refrigerant by increasing the latent heat of the refrigerant and increasing the performance of the system.  We  recently decided to put our long-held claim of “15% lower duct temperature” to the test.

PROCEDURE FOR INITIAL READINGS:

  • Refrigerant was removed from the system.
  • The system was connected to  an FJC 6912 5cfm vacuum pump for 30 minutes.
  • 34 ounces of R-134a was added.
  • The system ran for 10 minutes with the blower on low between temperature readings.

PROCEDURE FOR “AFTER EXTREME COOL®”  READINGS:

  • Refrigerant was removed from the system.
  • The system was connected to  an FJC 6912 5cfm vacuum pump for 30 minutes.
  • 24 ounces of R-134a was added.
  • System ran for 5 minutes before 1 can of FJC 685 refrigerant with Extreme Cold® was added.
  • Total added to system was 34 ounces of R-134a PLUS 2 ounces Extreme Cold® . (FJC 685 refrigerant with Extreme Cold® contains 10 ounces of R-134a and 2 ounces Extreme Cold® .
  • The system ran for 10 minutes with the blower on low between temperature readings.

RESULTS:

FINDINGS:

Extreme Cold® outperformed FJC’s advertising claims by a significant margin.  In addition to its performance-boosting characteristics, Extreme Cold® extends compressor life and prevents small leaks by restoring seals and O-rings.  It is compatible with all ester and PAG oils

Extreme Cold® is available  in 2 oz bottles which are compatible with both R-1234yf and R-134a refrigerants, as well as 3-oz cans (2 oz Extreme Cold® pressurized with R-134a propellant) and 12 oz R-134a  refrigerant cans, which administer a full application while charging the system with refrigerant.

NOTE:

Will not adversely affect system lubrication.  Not for use on electric or hybrid vehicles.
