Prepare Your Vehicle for Summer NOW

Spring is right around the corner, and right after that we’ll be hit with the stifling heat of summer.

FJC’s distributors are already purchasing their refrigerant, tools and equipment for the upcoming season so they’re prepared.  It’s equally important for drivers to be prepared in advance of summer as well.  The heat, dust, and stop-and-go traffic of summer all take their tolls on a vehicle. While it’s fresh on your mind, follow these tips to ensure optimum wellness of your car:

• Antifreeze/Cooling system: Ever notice how many cars break down in the summer? The most common reason for summer breakdowns is overheating. This is an ideal time to refer to your user manual and then assess the level, condition, and concentration of coolant in your vehicle to help avoid this inconvenience before summer is upon us.
• Air Conditioning: This is also a great time to inspect your auto A/C. Was it working well at the end of last season?  If not, you likely have a leak which continued throughout the winter (hint, an under performing A/C will not get better on it’s own).  Check our website for a wide variety of  leak detection and stop leak tools and products.   Also, consider replacing your cabin air filters which clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system.
• Oil: Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual (every 5,000 – 10,000 miles), more often if you make frequent short trips or carry or tow excess weight in your vehicle.
• Engine performance: Be sure to get engine problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected before the weather warms up. Replace your car’s filters (air, fuel, etc.) as recommended, and more often in preparation for dusty summer conditions. Remember, problems with your vehicle are amplified by cold or hot weather as well as extreme weather changes.
• Windshield Wipers: While you’re maintaining your vehicle for summer, this is a perfect time to check your wiper blades, after winter conditions have taken their toll. Replace worn blades and stock up with plenty of windshield washer fluid.   A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard due to decreased visability.
• Tires: Weather changes cause pothole and uneven driving surfaces, both which take a big toll on tires.  As winter ends, this is a perfect time to show your tires some love.  Have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Check tire pressure often, (while they’re cold for the most accurate measurement). Don’t forget to check your spare and be sure the jack is in good condition. Examine tires for tread life, uneven wear, or nicks and cuts on the sidewalls. An alignment may be warranted if there’s uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side.
• Brakes: Brakes should be routinely inspected and especially if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer stopping distances. Minor brake problems should be repaired promptly to ensure continued vehicle safety.
• Battery: Batteries can fail any time of the year, but while it’s on your mind, check your battery and cables. FJC offers a full line of power tools, testers and equipment to help you in this regard.
