In the wake of increased global environmental regulation, R-1234yf has been introduced to exceed both United States EPA and European F-Gas phase-out guidelines for high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.  R-1234yf has become the industry standard refrigerant to replace R-134a globally for environmental reasons.  R-1234yf has an atmospheric life expectancy of 11 days, which translates into a Global Warming Potential  rating of less than 1.  By contrast, R-134a has an atmospheric life expectancy of 13 years, which translates into a GWP rating of 1400.

OEM Adoption of R-1234yf

R-1234yf refrigerant is now the standard for all vehicles in Europe.  Similarly, most US major automakers have also adopted R-1234yf in  several or all of their models, with estimates showing that nearly 70% of model year 2019 vehicles have R-1234yf air conditioning systems installed.  The table below indicates which  manufacturers  have adopted R-1234yf as of 2019 and provides irrefutable evidence that yf is dominating the automotive market.

R-1234yf Fittings and Service

R-1234yf  has unique and different fittings from R-134a on both the refrigerant canister and car service ports.  The specially designed can tap (Part #6840)  allows for safe and effective discharge of R-1234yf through patented backflow prevention, reverse threading for secure attachment, and proper fittings to meet SAE specifications.

Note:  Honeywell’s 8oz. R-1234yf can with self-sealing valve technology is not subject to EPA 608/609 Certification or California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements.
